Preschool Measurement Activities

In preschool and lower elementary our goal is to teach kids concepts. Especially when we are talking about math. Details like formulas and units of measurement are not our goal. We want kids to had a deep foundational understanding about a concept before we start focusing on the smaller details. In regards to measurement, we want our preschoolers to understand what the concept of measurement is before we focus in on details like the various units of measurement. Because of this we often measure with objects instead of using a ruler.

Back to School Preschool Activity

Your preschooler will measure the various school supplies items in this back to school themed activity. We used counting cubes for measuring, but any identically sized object will work. Mini erasers, pom poms, and beads are all great suggestions.

Start by printing the template. Now, starting at the bottom, place counting cubes on the school supplies touching one another until they reach the top of the school supply.

Count how many cubes it took to reach the top.  Repeat for each school supply

TIPS:

  • You can easily replace the counting cubes with any other manipulative like pom poms
  • Continue the learning by comparing the measurements. Which one is the longest, shortest, etc.
