Inches, feet, centimeters, these are all conventional measurements that adults are familiar with. But to kids they are completely abstract. When we first teach our kids about measuring for preschoolers and kindergarnters, we want to focus on unconventional forms of measurement, like measuring with pom poms or mini erasers. The point of this is to teach our kids that when we are measuring we are seeing how many identically sized objects are equal to our object. Our kids can see and feel this when they use manipulative in a way they can’t using a ruler. Measuring Activity
Surfs up with this activity as we measure various length surf boards using mini erasers. If you choose to measure using a different manipulative, make sure that all of the manipulatives you use to measure are the same length.
Required Materials
- Free Surf Board Measuring Printable
- Mini Erasers
Start by printing the black and white template. Now beginnin at the bottom, place mini erasers on the surf board touching one another until they reach the top of the board. Count how many mini erasers it took to reach the top. Repeat for each surf board
Teacher Tips
- You can easily replace the mini erasers with any other manipulative like pom poms
- Continue the learning by comparing the measurements. Which one is the longest, shortest, etc.
