Exploding Jack-o-Lantern Pumpkin Science Experiment for October

To complete fall science experiments all you need are these simple supplies you already have in your kitchen.
Supplies:
- Sandwich size ziplock bag (or larger if you want to double it for double the fun!) – the slide ones are quick and easy or little fingers!
- vinegar
- orange food coloring (optional)
- baking soda
- paper towel
- black sharpie
I suggest doing this project outside to make sure you dont’ make a mess =)

Carefully use a sharpie to draw on a simple jack o lantern face including eyes, nose, and mouth.
HINT: Be careful as sharpie markers are PERMANENT so they should be used with close supervision.

Put 3 teaspoons of baking soda in a paper towel, wrap up into a pouch.
HINT: You can add more baking soda for a bigger reaction!

Put vinegar and fod coloring in a measuring cup or bowl.

Put the baking soda wrapped paper towel in your ziplock bag but hold to the side. Now quickly pour in 1-2 cups of distilled white vinegar into your pumpkin ziplock bag.

Quickly seal the bag as the chemical reaction between the baking soda and vinegar is about to occur which will result in Carbon Dioxide. This CO2 gas will begin to fill the bag more and more until the bag cannot tolerate being stretched any more and BANG!
HINT: You will probabaly want to do this project outside as it can make a mess!

So how does this simple chemistry experiment for kids work? As baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, mixes with vinegar, carbon dioxide is created. The bag starts to fill with carbon dioxide (and thatâs why you see the bag start to swell up) until the pressure is too much and ⌠BOOM!
- before you try this easy preschool science experiment ask them to guess what will happen (called a hypothesis)
- Try with different size bags
- Or have children mix up the amount of vinegar or baking soda and see what happens
