We waited all winter for some snow and February brought it to us – In abundance! So, not only did we make snowmen and tried our hand at an igloo, but we took it a few steps further to make this Snow Volcano. It had been a while since we had done any winter science experiments, so I combined the two. We created a snow volcano experiment. It was so ‘cool’. Pun intended. Let me show you how to make a snow volcano in this fun winter activity for preschool, toddler, pre-k, kindergarten, first grade, and 2nd graders too.

This snow volcano is much like other baking soda and vinegar volcanoes that you have probably made before, but so much more exciting! So when it snows, even a little bit, grab the supplies and get erupting! My favorite part is that you don’t need to really clean-up from thiw winter science project!

What You’ll Need:

  • Vinegar
  • Baking Soda
  • Food Coloring
  • Squirt Bottles
  • Snow

Start by creating a ‘mountain’ with the snow. Then put a little divot at the top. This is where you will put the baking soda, so make it maybe 1 cup or larger. Now fill the divot with baking soda.

We mixed vinegar and food coloring in squeeze bottles. We filled the bottles up with vinegar, added the gel food coloring and shook them until the food coloring was mixed in.

When you’re ready for the eruption, squirt the vinegar onto the baking soda. You’ll instantly see the fizz. It is so interesting to see it on the snow instead of other surfaces that we have used before.

It’s fun to see it bubble and ooze all down the side of the snow mountain. While this is an experiment that we have done many times, in other ways, doing this on the snow was super exciting and fun.

If it is too cold to do this STEM Snow Activity outside, you can easily bring the snow inside on a cookie sheet and do the experiment inside. You could also take a bucket full of snow into the bathtub and do it there.
